Inside Story: Libya’s peace pleas not enough

After more than a month of fighting, Muammar Gaddafi the Libyan Leader has once again renewed diplomatic efforts seeking an end to the crisis.
On Sunday, Abdel Ati Obeidi, Libya’s deputy foreign minister landed in Athens, carrying a message to the Prime Minister from Gaddafi.
Gaddafi’s message: to seek an end to the fighting.

The momentum on the front in Ajdabiya is changing slowly in favour of the opposition forces as many pro-Gaddafi forces switch sides.
The city has not seen heavy fighting but has come under rocket attack by Gaddafi loyalists stationed on the outskirts.
After the rebels managed to consolidate their position in this eastern Libyan town, many people, who had fled, are making a comeback.

Muammar Gaddafi, the Libyan leader, has always publicly insisted that he will not leave Libya, despite the crisis in the country, and that he will fight “to the death” against his opponents.
In private, however, it appears that he may be open to a negotiated exit.
