United Nations’ gaffe with Gaddafi regime – comedy of errors

Believe it or not capacity to lie cannot surpass these scintillating eulogies, just months ago-spoken by Arab nations at the UN Human Rights council about, well….Gaddafi regime!

Syria: The Libyan Arab Jamahiriya has a unique experience in democracy that has allowed for growth and development in promotion of human rights.

“Palestinian Authority observer: We highly commend the national report. This proves the Jamahiriya’s keen interest in improving and promoting human rights.

“Saudi Arabia: The interest shown by the Libyan Arab Jamahiriya…shows very clearly the important it attached to human rights.”

The Human Rights Council admitted Libya as a member last May, and on November 9, its members discussed a Universal Periodic Review that is to be adopted March 18.
The Palestinian Authority and several countries, including Saudi Arabia and Syria – leaders on the American list of human rights violators – lauded the Libyan dictator for “democracy” and protection of human rights.
The Council’s previous censures of countries have focused solely on Israel.

The executive director of UN Watch, Hillel Neuer, told Al Jazeera that “time and again, the United Nations has rewarded this murderous, racist regime” and turned a blind eye to its crimes.

As the United Nations’ General Assembly prepared Tuesday to debate the suspension of Libya from the UN Human Rights Council after the mass murder of rebels by strongman Muammar Qaddafi, non-governmental organization UN Watch held the UN’s feet to the fire in a UNHRC session and in press interviews, stressing that Libya should have never been elected to the UNHRC first.
