The US space shuttle Endeavour has safely landed after its final flight.

The ship touched down at its Florida home base in the early hours, completing its 25th and last mission. It caps a 16-day voyage to deliver a premier science experiment to the International Space Station.

Endeavour can now look forward to a life on public display in Los Angeles. The United States is retiring its three-ship fleet due to high operating costs and to free up funds to develop new spacecraft that can travel beyond the space station’s 220-mile-high (346-km-high) orbit.

At least 290 people were killed across six states – more than two-thirds of them in Alabama – as America’s deadliest tornado outbreak in almost four decades pulverised entire neighbourhoods.
