Rockets and heavy artillery fire were heard close to Colonel Muammar Gaddafi’s Tripoli compound as rebels battled with government forces on Tuesday.

euronews correspondent Mustafa Bag is following developments in Libya closely, on the ground. Between periods of calm and violence, he sent this report by phone:

“Control of Tripoli is mostly still in the hands of the rebels. I have been told that the airport is under rebel control, but I can not confirm that because there is intense fighting along the route to the airport, so I can not get to it. Some areas between it and the presidental palace are still in the hands of Gaddafi loyalists.”

Nato planes have continued their Libyan campaign even intercepting one of three scud missiles launched by pro Gaddafi forces from the city of Sirte.

The Pentagon has also revealed that US security personnel have been embedded with opposition forces advising the amateur army.

Although rebels claim to control of much of Tripoli, remnant forces still loyal to Gaddafi are staging a stand particularly at the leader’s heavily fortified compound.
