Iceland’s most active volcano has erupted again shutting the county’s airspace.

Grimsvertn in southeast Iceland has hurled white smoke some 20 kilometres into the air but officials are downplaying the chance of a repeat of last year’s travel chaos.

In March last year, another volcano under the Eyjafjallajokul glacier erupted, spewing out a massive ash cloud and shutting large parts of European airspace.

Authorities feared dust particles could damage aircraft engines.

An estimated 10 million people had their travel plans disrupted by the eruption….

Experts say the eruption of Iceland’s most active volcano this weekend is unlikely to create the international traffic chaos seen a year ago.

The Grimsvotn burst into life on Saturday night forcing a temporary closure of local airspace, but the country was ready said Pall Einarsson, a geophysicist at the University of Iceland.

“An eruption now is not a surprise. In fact the volcano has been monitored and this eruption was anticipated already last fall,” he explained.
